Foreword: VIEWS 1996 Proceedings

These proceedings contain the technical papers selected for presentation at the 1996 Workshop on Materialized Views: Techniques and Applications, held in Montreal, Canada, June 7, 1996. The workshop was held in co-operation with ACM Special Interest Group on Management of Data (SIGMOD), and in conjunction with the ACM Symposium on Principles of Database Systems (PODS) and the ACM SIGMOD Conference.

The one day workshop drew 32 submissions, and the program committee selected 14 papers for presentation and inclusion in this proceedings. In addition to the papers, a panel "Are Materialized Views Commercially Viable" was organized at the workshop.

We are very grateful to Tim Merrett, the SIGMOD 1996 Conference General Chair, for encouraging and nurturing the workshop idea from the very beginning, and for making the workshop possible. We would like to thank the program committee and the external referees for doing an excellent job in reviewing the submitted papers. We also thank the organization committee for all the help we received.
