There has been a lot of work on algorithms to maintain views, and more recently on issues relating to maintenance and computation of logs, policies on doing maintenance, and concurrency control issues in supporting materialized views. At the same time, there is a realization that materialized views can be used to support traditional and new database applications. For example, materialized views are a natural extension of data replication.

Have the technology and applications reached a stage where materialized views will be supported by commercial database systems in the near future? How soon will it be before commercial systems will be advertising support for materialized views?
