Kirusa awarded patent for "Signal-Based Session Management for Telephonic Applications"
Patent by the leading developer of value-added mobile solutions
provides much desired flexibility in using automated telephony systems
New Providence; New Jersey; Tuesday, September 25, 2007: Kirusa, the leading developer of Voice SMS and other value added mobile services, has been granted a patent (Patent number 7,254,227) by the US Patent and Trademarks Office for "Signal-Based Session Management for Telephonic Applications." The patent is for a technology that allows an automated participant in a telephone conversation, such as an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system or a voice browser, to react to the placing of the “conversation” on hold. When a conversation between an IVR and a person is placed on hold, a signal is provided to the IVR to take appropriate action, such as suspending its participation in the conversation, extending the time for which it awaits a response from the person, continuing the conversation in a “visual” mode using the keypad and display on the person’s handset or some other appropriate action. Several value added services, including Kirusa Voice SMS, can benefit from this technology.
On receiving the patent David Berkley, Chief Scientist, Kirusa said, “The granting of this patent validates our technology leadership, reflects our history of innovation and protects our intellectual property.” He further said, “This is a solution to a problem arising due to the increasing number of automated systems used in telephony. The solution improves interactions between humans and machines by allowing a machine application to be put on hold (e.g. if another important call comes to the user) without losing the time invested in the 'conversation' up to that point. For example, when a mobile user who is in the middle of sending a Voice SMS message gets another call through call waiting, the Voice SMS session can automatically be placed on hold, to be resumed when the user comes back to the Voice SMS session. So, instead of losing the Voice SMS session, the user can continue from where he or she left off.”
